Choosing the right nursing review center

On August 18 and 19, some 32,000 nurses will take their oath after passing the Nurse Li censure Exam (NLE), given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). The number is less than half of the almost 80,000 who took the exams last June. The NLE, given twice yearly by the PRC, will be given again this coming November. About the same number of people are expected to take the exams, and, sadly, almost the same passing rate is expected.

This situation has spawned a new lucrative industry – nursing review centers. Centers offering review classes for the NLE and even the American nursing boards have sprouted all over the country, each claiming to be the best and giving guarantees to potential students that they know the secrets to passing the board exams. Enrollment fees at these review centers are not cheap so it is important for students to consider several important factors when choosing a review center.

According to Angelica Marcelino, Chief Operations Officer of Rachell Allen Reviewers USA, students must consider not only the teaching method used but also the class size, the facility, and more importantly, the experience and credibility of the trainors and the people behind the center.

“Sometimes students are swayed by the popularity of a review center. They enroll only to realize that they will be attending classes with more than 100 other students. Because the size of the class is so big, the quality of teaching is compromised,” Marcelino said.

“Since these are review classes, it is essential that students are given the opportunity to interact more intimately with their trainors so they can more effectively focus on their “weak” areas. Here at Rachell Allen, we provide an intimate setting where students are given the opportunity to directly ask their trainors whatever questions they may have about the subject being discussed,” Marcelino added.

She said it is also important to look at the experience and integrity of the people behind a review center, so as not to be lured by centers who are obviously just in the business to make money. Rachell Allen Reviewers initially offered review classes for the American nursing boards – the NCLEX and CGFNS. This was mainly because its founder, Ms. Rachell Allen has more than 20 years of nursing experience in America where she is currently a Nurse Practitioner.

However, now that the NLE has started to adopt the same testing style as the American Boards, the company felt it was time to start offering review classes for the NLE, the local nursing board. After all, it is Ms. Allen's vision to equip Filipino nurses with world-class skills that would allow them to excel wherever they choose to work, either here or abroad.

“Starting this August we will be holding review classes for the NLE set this November. Through our world class review program we hope to share with students who are set to take the NLE the same secrets that allowed hundreds of our students to pass the NCLEX and CGFNS,” Marcelino said.

Rachell Allen's review programs offer a comprehensive approach intended to enhance the nursing competencies and ensure the confidence and readiness of reviewees in taking the NLE. It includes not only curriculum and competence-based lecture on various nursing subjects but also relevant information on how to develop good study habits, test-taking preparation and strategies. They are currently offering review classes in their Taft Ave., Ortigas Center, and Sucat centers.
